Sheltered housing is usually available to those over 55 years old reside reside in a community with other over 55’s.
It can be thought of as ‘housing with support’ providing various elderly care services.
Some common features of sheltered housing include:

- Residential communal areas such as gardens or lounges
- Restricted access for non-residents
- Social events for residents and elderly day care with activities provided.
